Lord of the Flies
Chichester Festival Theatre
In January, we ran a Creative Industries Careers Day inconjunction with Chichester Festival Theatre, Chichester College & Pallant House Gallery. The day offered an opportunity for young people to discover more about the varied creative professions and demystify the many pathways leading into those roles.
The event showcased theatre, visual arts, design, writing, music, production, curating, archiving and traditional trades, devised to ignite potential, spark ideas, and show the endless possibilities available.
Targeted for students choosing GCSE options, next step pathways, or those ready to survey the employment landscape, students were given the opportunity to quiz experts on apprenticeships, explore trainee schemes, attend panel discussions, discuss career pathways and employment opportunities.
We hosted approximately 400 participants from schools, home education groups, uni’s and colleges who actively pursued over 1200 participations across the day. We were supported by 23 organisations as well as 26 individual contributors across a range of creative industries all at the very top of their game.

‘Today has been really good - we have spoken with a very diverse group of people that we would never usually get the opportunity interact with. It’s great that people can learn about the different jobs and roles that we, and other organisations have available- often they didn’t know that the opportunities exist. Events like this are so important, especially reaching people before they get to college. Many of the events we do are for people who are 18 and over, so it has been great to talk to teenagers about possible careers so that it can support their decision making when considering school and college courses.’ Dani | Cameron Mackintosh Ltd
‘We have been able to showcase what we can do to individuals with creative skill sets who might want to consider other options when they leave education. This event is opening their eyes to different opportunities and things that they might not know or have seen before. There are so many creative aspects to the work we do that young people may not be aware of, and it’s great to be able to share what we do. Cory | Rolls Royce
It's been great to speak to lots of different students. and give them more insight into the different roles there are in theatre. Having regional events is so important -there are lots of opportunities in London which unfortunately, many students are not able to access. Outreach Coordinator | LW Theatres
It has been great to see how engaged the pupils were in the workshops and to hear the quality of the questions at the end. They were really attentive and interested and I think got a lot from the sessions. I think events like this are extremely important because I personally don’t think there's enough happening at the moment to highlight the breadth of pathways into the creative cultural industries. People think it’s all about learning to play an instrument, but don't understand that there are another 300 roles in the music business and so many different career opportunities to explore.
Paul | West Sussex Music
It's been a wonderful day, and our students have really enjoyed it. It's been brilliant from an accessibility point of view- we teach students with additional needs, and they have loved the day and learnt a lot. Events like this are super important to show our young people that there are options for them. We have had a couple of students that had no idea about the backstage, technical side of theatre and they are really interested after listening to the talk and getting to ask questions. It’s been brilliant. Willow | Theatre Inc, Chichester College

2024-25 Theatre Visits
supported by
In November & December 2024 Theatreworks funded theatre visits for over 220 children from 5 schools across West Sussex to attend the Chichester Festival Theatre as part of an initiative to offer theatre opportunities to children from underrepresented communities.
My favourite part was when they had to try to fit the shoe onto one of the sisters. It was funny because it didn't really fit and they had to chop off a bit of her foot and it was funny.
Year 3 child.
It's important for children to go to the theatre because it's fun!
Year 3 child
I really liked it - the singing was really nice. I haven't been to the theatre before - it was really cool.
Year 6 child
It was magical watching this alongside the children. I loved every one of their giggles, squeals and gasps of excitement. Thank you so much for helping us to provide this opportunity to the children - it really was a memorable experience for so many of them!"

BBC’s Bring the Drama at the Chichester Festival Theatre

Activities that schools have been asking us to deliver include;
CPD on drama techniques that can be transferrable, e.g. warm-up activities for behaviour management, concentration techniques etc.
Workshops about delivering Shakespeare's stories and words to a variety of year groups. How to use drama as a tool across the curriculum
More support on showing students arts pathways into the world of work, or as an important part of health, wellbeing, leisure activity as an adult
A really helpful and valuable tool for students would be an Arts Passport for Sussex/Surrey: groups, after-school clubs, holiday arts clubs, museums, kid's shows, etc.
We would benefit from a further practical workshop session (Shakespeare) for children or perhaps linking up with other schools you are aware of who have run a full enrichment day or week

"Theatre can teach us so much about ourselves and about others, it can help us to be empathetic, sympathetic and most importantly laugh together. When children and young people experience live theatre it gives them that all important stepping stone to enable a lifelong relationship, and hopefully light a spark for the next generation of theatregoers."
